Designer Andrew Suvalsky transformed this Upper West Side penthouse from a quaint pied-a-terre into a spacious sanctuary for avid entertainers.

THE CLIENT
Two western Canadians living in the U.S. have an impressive lineup of residential projects under their belt: a midcentury modern home in Austin, a seaside cottage in Rhode Island, a compound on a private lake island in Toronto and even a customized tour bus for traveling.
Art throughout came from Robert Kipniss, Ansel Adams, Thomas Darnell, National Geographic and Old Print Shop NYC.
Next up? A home base in New York City. “With so many places to call home, what they really wanted was a mecca for family gatherings with their three grown children and grandchildren, all of whom live in and around NYC,” says Andrew Suvalsky of Andrew Suvalsky Designs, who was brought in to take on this project.

THE PROJECT
Once on the scene, Suvalsky knew he had a massive yet exciting project at hand. The Lincoln Center-adjacent penthouse offers incredible views from the Hudson River to Central Park. “[An] important aspect of the apartment is that it is also functional and spacious, so that the clients can easily have their children and grandchildren over while still in an elegant environment,” Suvalsky says. On the to-do list was turning the apartment from a two-bedroom into a four-bedroom while still maintaining ample room for comfortable living and entertaining.
The home offers unparalleled city views.
THE PRIORITY
The space needed to be ready to host everyone from grandparents to grandchildren. “Our goal with this project was to create a space that felt luxurious and modern while still being an inviting space for entertaining,” Suvalsky says. “The client wanted a contemporary take on an art deco aesthetic, which we accomplished by curating custom finishes and pieces throughout the home.”

THE DETAILS
Suvalsky says his clients allowed the team to run free with their creativity and were open to all their ideas. “We incorporated a regal color palette with various shades of creams and blues, along with touches of brass and gold,” he says. Those materials are used in stunning ways, from gold pocket doors and decor accessories throughout to frames for the TV and dozens of artworks. “The design features many pieces of art from significant and emerging American artists including Ansel Adams and Robert Kipniss,” Suvalsky adds.
MCC Millwork put its touch on the bedrooms’ closets and dressers.
THE CHALLENGE
A need for more space forced the team to slip into a problem-solving mentality. “The client wanted a spacious, inviting home so they could have family gatherings,” Suvalsky says, and he made sure the team was able to achieve that.

THE OUTCOME
“We seamlessly blended luxury with practicality,” Suvalsky says, citing the client’s openness as one of the big factors in creating such a space. “The three-year, full gut project, proverbially stripped down to the brick outer walls, resulted in the conversion of an awkwardly spaced two-bedroom pied-a-terre into a true home with four bedrooms, a gourmet chef ’s kitchen, a butler’s pantry and wine bar and all the other amenities that make the space both superglam and inviting to family. … Our biggest challenge was making sure we made our client’s wish list a reality.” But in the end, Suvalsky and team transformed the space into the sanctuary the clients envisioned.
