Noritaka Tatehana’s pink leather ballerina pointe-style shoes (2012), on view at The Museum at FIT
Pale slippers, leotards, full-diameter tutus—the costumes of ballet have inspired fashion more than any other art form has. To celebrate this influence, The Museum at FIT presents Ballerina: Fashion’s Modern Muse, providing ample context about how ballet incorporated itself into mainstream and high fashion. Dating back to the 1930s, the large-scale exhibition includes approximately 90 objects, including a Pierre Balmain debutante gown, a Claire McCardell swimsuit, Christian Louboutin heels and Geoffrey Holder’s design for Firebird, blurring the line between costume and couture.
