A single abstract painting inspired an entire Upper West Side space crafted by the brilliant Jessica Shaw.

When met with art-loving homeowners with bold, vibrant personalities, Interior Design Director Jessica Shaw and her team at The Turett Collaborative responded accordingly, with an eclectic, eye-catching Upper West Side outcome.

The design aficionado and young family garnered inspiration for the home from the abstract painting “Computer Whiz” (Robert Overby, 1987). “The goal became to re-create something as bold and unique as this painting, that grabs the attention of the viewer, or guest, and becomes unforgettable,” Shaw shares.

“Unforgettable” is certainly the word to describe this West 81st Street home. Upon setting foot in the residence, one feels immersed in a prismatic, sculptural space. The entryway is adorned with lighting from Apparatus, a white-and-gold Cuff console by Natasha Baradaran opposite the powder room and Westfall & Kitson wallcovering from Bradley that mimics brushstrokes on a canvas, making the space immediately feel like an inhabitable gallery.

“[The] wow factor was something both the client and I wanted the home to have, so the opportunity to source modern, eclectic pieces for the home was unlimited,” Shaw describes. “For the family, the move into a larger home allowed them to reimagine how their space could be optimized for their lifestyle.”

The quintessence of these “modern, eclectic pieces” that Shaw speaks of would arguably be the great room, which is composed of multicolored ombre drapery, custom abstract rugs from Warp and Weft and side tables designed by The Turett Collaborative, made from excess marble used to create the living room wall console. With vibrant shades of green and deep blue hues, the great room is certainly a showstopper—but the electrifying essence of the home doesn’t stop there. The media room features a blue, orange and green ombre wallpaper from Calico, with a fluorescent painting by Dan Attoe and a striking, custom cobalt media cabinet designed by The Turrett Collaborative.

The common denominator of the residence is color, as it continues to one of the children’s rooms, which features a kaleidoscopic, geometric ceiling wallpaper from Flavor Paper. The primary bedroom is equally radiant, with rich purple tones and accents like the handblown art deco chandelier from High Style Deco in NYC.
The awe-stricken reaction to the artistic value of the abode is evidently unanimous, as homeowner Mara Kanner discloses: “Based on one piece of artwork we sent for inspiration, Jessica created a chic, colorful, sexy city home where vibrant primary colors, rich textures and beautiful furniture forms reign.”
