New Yorkers for Children fall gala to benefit youth in foster care

Guests tend to get teary-eyed at the New Yorkers for Children’s fall gala, and it’s not entirely because of the flowing Champagne. For part of the evening, the powerhouse nonprofit cedes the stage to some of its most inspiring beneficiaries, young men and women who have transformed themselves from foster children with uncertain futures into accomplished scholars. Cheering them on are major role models, including Knicks star and philanthropist Carmelo Anthony, who was this year’s honoree. According to Serena Williams, the uplift goes the other way, too: “They always make me cry,” she confided. Photos by Billy Farrell Agency
