John Currin, “Mantis” (2021), detail
On View
In his first solo exhibit in New York since 2010, artist John Currin has unveiled a plethora of new paintings at the Gagosian in the new exhibit Memorial. The engaging show features provocative new works, which Currin started in 2020, all calling on themes of intimacy, eroticism, and feminine and masculine identities while ushering them into a new context that builds upon the explicitly sexual imagery seen throughout his earlier career. Currin oft en incorporates elements of his eternal muse—his wife, artist Rachel Feinstein. One of the interesting new works in Memorial titled “Pinup” captures a nude female subject draped in rags, arms raised. Likewise, in “Sunflower,” a female subject depicted in an isolated space holds only a large red flower, with a mission to escape the confines of the scene. Memorial is complex and startling—yet it’s hard to look away. Through Oct. 30, 541 W. 24th St. –LB

The Great Escape
The Aurum offers a dreamy escape from the bustling city.
The Catskills are welcoming a new transformative hotel and hammam experience like no other this fall. The Aurum, a 36-room hotel set on 131 acres in Mount Temper, is the brainchild of Million Dollar Listing’s Steve Gold and interior designer Samuel Amoia, and is the co-developers’ first venture into the hospitality industry. Inside the main building will be the historic Maidstone Lodge, which was built in 1902 and more recently underwent extensive renovations, and will be home to the lobby, guest rooms and a Sicilian farm-to-table restaurant. Influenced by ancient Rome and its impact on today’s society, the hotel will reimagine the bathing culture that was at the heart of the first social clubs in Rome. With the thoughtfully crafted Aurum Thermae, the hammam and spa calling on its Roman roots, guests will step back in time and unwind just as ancient leaders and philosophers did thousands of years ago. For a bit more privacy and exclusivity, 12 mountain bungalows starring incredible views and private gardens await. Mount Tremper –AT
