Petit h, an innovative project from Hermès that emphasizes sustainability and creativity through the reuse of materials, has made a vibrant return to New York City. This year, it has taken over Maison Madison, the iconic Hermès store on Madison Avenue. This marks the first time Petit h is hosted at this location, and it features a unique staging designed by Lucia Hierro. The Dominican-American conceptual artist infuses the setup with a distinctly New York flair, transforming familiar city elements like apples, metal fire escapes, road signs, sidewalks, and storefronts into a whimsical urban exploration.
Hierro’s design offers narrative scenes where everyday objects are reimagined: hot dog and burger bento boxes become vessels for local delicacies, a wheelbarrow stool unveils its versatile functions, and a leather mushroom-adorned stool captures the essence of New York’s fall season.
Established in 2010, Petit h is a testament to Hermès’ commitment to creativity and sustainability. Under the artistic direction of Godefroy de Virieu, the project takes a unique approach by starting the creative process with leftover materials like leather, silk, crystal, and porcelain. These materials, which are no longer usable by other métiers at Hermès, are given new life. Artists, artisans, and designers collaborate to reimagine these resources, crafting innovative and hybrid objects that combine functionality with the high-quality aesthetic and craftsmanship synonymous with Hermès. “Petit h is, above all, a laboratory of creations and experimentation within Hermès,” explains de Virieu. “Petit h aims to enrich the heritage of the house and to be a melting pot of know-how both in France and in the world.” From Oct. 11-26, 706 Madison Ave.,hermes.com
