“An important purpose of this anniversary collaboration is to shift Poltrona Frau's perspective towards the future,” Poltrona Frau CEO Nicola Coropulis is quoted in a press release, “not only in terms of our first collaboration with an international artist of this nature, but also on the theme of environmental protection.”
The anniversary archibald uses Frau’s new Impact Less leather which uses a chrome-free production process that substantially reduces the use of water and chemical components.
The upholstery is soft on the backrest but taut on the armchair's silhouette, and is covered in reds, oranges, yellows, whites and blues all over. The vibrancy of the colors creates an iridescent and multi-color chrome on the metal of the legs.
I had the opportunity to visit the Poltrona Frau Headquarters to see the museum, the entire collection and learn about the brand's history,” Pantone is quoted. “We ended up choosing the Archibald as the base for my work because of its minimal frame, but also the unique characteristics like the arms of the chair and the details on the backrest. The idea was to use a very minimal and iconic design, and to juxtapose it against my graphics, which are very loud and very dynamic.”
The Archibald Limited Edition is also available in a miniature on a 1:5 scale.
With only 110 chairs in production(to match the 110 years of the design company’s history, this limited-edition piece blends the essence of Poltrona Frau’s image and evolution. The chair will be available for purchase in the United States later this Aprill and will be on display during Milan Design Week in June.
Poltrona Frau was founded in 1912 by Sardinian-born Renzo Frau in Turin, Italy. The company specializes in leather seating for interiors and automotive applications.
Pantone is an Argentinian-Spanish artist who found his love or art via graffiti at the age of 12. He graduated with a Fine Art degree in Valencia, and continues to create transformative pieces that tackle themes of digital revolution and modern times.
“Color only happens because of light, and light is the only reason why life happens,” Pantone is quoted on his official website. "Light and color are the very essence of visual art. Thanks to television, computers, and modern lighting, our perception of light and color has changed completely.”
