On-air or real-time, Mark Consuelos plays the hot husband and debonair dad with ease.

ASK ANY DOTING dad: It is his ratings at home that really matter most. “This show has an amazing fan base, and more importantly, my daughter thinks it’s very cool that I’m doing it,” says Mark Consuelos of his role on hit CW show Riverdale. The impossibly handsome actor plays the Archie-reboot series’ Hiram Lodge, a character who was set up in the first season. “You never saw but you felt his presence,” Consuelos says, alluding to the mystery behind the man riddled by scandal. “The writers are giving me great stuff to play, and I’m excited to see where the role goes.”

As for his real-life role of father and husband—Consuelos famously married his All My Children co-star Kelly Ripa, with whom he runs a Soho-based production company, Milojo Productions—he enjoys helping raise his picture-perfect family with Ripa in Manhattan. “I think it’s easier in some ways,” Consuelos says of city life. “You don’t need a car; there are tons of sports and activities. What you give up in backyards, you make up in culture and unique experiences with your kids.”

The star often gets asked how he and Ripa manage to outlast so many other celebrity couples and survive rigorous shooting schedules, such as his seven months of shooting 22 episodes of Riverdale in Vancouver, British Columbia, and her daily filming of Live With Kelly and Ryan. “I laugh because anyone with kids knows they keep you grounded,” he says. “We like spending time with each other, so there’s definitely an incentive to keep a balance between career and family.”

Sounds like more than mere role play, indeed.
