53’s sleek new Midtown space
CONTEMPORARY CUISINE
Restaurateur Ahmass Fakahany brings his passion project to life with new contemporary yet edgy Asian eatery 53. Located above MoMA’s new extended wing in Midtown, within an 82-story Jean Nouvel-designed residential tower, the three-level restaurant fuses Asian cuisine with the artistic vibe of the city. “For some time, I have wanted to open in New York City an elevated Asian cuisine experience with different flavors and tastes in a comfortable and chic atmosphere, similar to many of the wonderful places I visited in grand hotels or stand-alone venues in key cities across Asia,” Fakahany says. Singaporean chef-partner Akmal Anuar and executive chef Mark Yu have created a well-crafted array of Cantonese dishes with Japanese ingredients and Southeast Asian influences. Early favorites include the sambal skate wrapped in bamboo leaf, served with a housemade cincalok sauce. 53 W. 53rd St.
